Welcoming a new employee in the company is not as easy as it seems. Often you are not aware of the readiness level of the employee. Your own culture could be an enabler or hindrance. My view is that you must allow space for surprises and sometimes disappointment but never take things personal. Every Induction and Orientation programme is unique to the employee. It however must follow the company’s philosophy, guidelines, cultural practices, policies and procedures. However, the new employee must be allowed to be his or her true self. Be open to learn from the new employee. Make him or her feel welcome and express themselves. All they need is support, guidance, mentorship, and clear instructions on which tasks must be done, how they are done, performance indicators and the metrics that will be used to measure their performance. Lastly, give them genuine feedback on how they are doing, and the areas of improvement they must work on.
